Let’s Make a Will Today
Online Will Drafting Service
Is an online will right for you?
An online Will service can be a convenient starting point, but it will not be suitable for every person or every estate. Understand the service before you start.
Questions before you begin?
Is a solicitor review included?
Yes, a solicitor review is included. A solicitor will check that your will makes sense, does not contain any obvious errors or contradictions and that it sets a clear, unambiguous record of your wishes. However, Select Wills Ltd is not a law firm and we are not not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Although individual solicitors are permitted to offer non-reserved services (such as will drafting) to the public from an unregulated business, the level of consumer protection is not the same. Some of the main differences are explained below.
What level of consumer protection do I receive when buying through Select Wills?
General consumer protection law (enforced by bodies like the Competition and Markets Authority and Trading Standards) applies when purchasing through Select Wills. Although Professional indemnity insurance is not legally required by unregulated businesses, we have in place professional indemnity insurance with a £2 million limit of indemnity. However, when you buy a will from us, our unregulated status means that there are fewer safeguards than when you purchase from a Solicitor Regulated law firm. For example, if something goes wrong, you cannot escalate the matter to the Legal Ombudsman and you cannot access the Solicitors Regulation Compensation Fund if you suffer a direct financial loss due caused by us.
Why is Select Wills an unregulated business?
Is Select Wills backed by Professional Indemnity Insurance?
Yes, we have professional indemnity cover in respect of any civil liability arising out of a breach of professional duty by the Insured in the course of the Professional Services up to a limit of £2 million pounds in the aggregate. This is a lower level of insurance than you would receive with an SRA Regulated firm, where policies must provide a minimum cover of £2 million for sole practitioners and partnerships, or £3 million for incorporated practices (such as LLPs) and licensed bodies, on an each-and-every-claim. Furthermore, unlike SRA Regulated firms, if our company closes down, we are not legally required to maintain 6 years of run-off cover to protect retired directors and compensate post-closure client claims.
How will my will be stored?
We do not store completed wills. However, if you wish, the Probate Registry in England and Wales will store your will for a fee. You can store your will with the Probate Service through a service called ”Safe Custody” for a one-off charge of £24. For more information about this service, please go to:
Does an online will suit everyone?
No. Some family, financial or international circumstances may call for tailored legal advice. If you are unsure, seek advice before relying on an online will. If your circumstances are complex — for example, if you have overseas assets, a business, a blended family or particular inheritance-tax concerns — consider obtaining tailored legal advice before deciding how to make your will. Take care to provide accurate information and read the service terms. A will also needs to be signed and witnessed in accordance with the legal requirements that apply in England and Wales.
